The making of

Adventure30 started off when I wrote out my bucket list a) for life in general and b) for this year. The bucket list ended up with over 100 things on it, which had to be shortened to 50, not sure why really? But anyway I had shown the original bucket list to my ‘Birmingham friends’ aka Kathryn and Jodie. Fast forward five months to my birthday and they surprised me with presents.

As as surprise they went through my bucket list to see which ones we could do together. Part one was a trip to a place I haven’t been to beforeย ย and part two of the present was a three month subscription to The Spicery. The Spicery is an online shop and subscription service that sends out monthly spice packets and recipes for meals you’ve probably never heard of or twists to meals you have heard of! As one of the items on my original list was to make a curry on my own/cook more this gift is perfect for me!

The first box was a Goan pork balchao with coconut pancakes plusย the box comes with a full meal (mine has a spice mix for two curries, rice, pancakes, chutney) plus a free sample spice mix for a tagine. So basically a free extra meal ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve never made a tagine before, but have visited Morrocco and had a few tagines there.

Each Sunday my housemate (Siobhan) and I take it in turns cooking lunch for each other, so this week I decided to use her as the guinea pig and see how it goes!

The tagine was simple to make, basically shop up veg, fry onion, add veg tin of tomatoes and spice mix and simmer. Now that’s my kind of cooking! After simmering for an hour I served up with quinoa and it reminded me of being back in Marrakesh eating tagine on a restaurant balcony and watching the world go by ๐Ÿ™‚ The serving suggestion said it would make enough for 4 but mine made enough for 6 meals, so even better!

The second meal in the box was more complicated and had more steps to make so I left this for a day when I knew I had a bit of free time so its not too rushed. On a free day I like to have a kitchen to myself, put a good film on and get cooking. I’m a bit of a messy cook so its probably a good thing to have a kitchen to myself!

Anyway fast forward to yesterday I had a day off, a friend coming for dinner and decided to try the full meal. It consists of two types of curry, two chutneys, rice and pancakes, so was a full banquet! The instructions for each dish were straightforward and the list of ingredients were easy to find things that you’d have at home or can find easily in the supermarket.

Each month you go online and can see the range of spice boxes available and can choose which one you fancy, or you can postpone it a month. I’ve ordered Mexican fish and chips for next month and can’t wait to try it. Thanks girls again for the present ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Wow, sounds like a great gift! Looks fun. My husband would like the curry and chutneys, but I really don’t. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Its a really good idea, I’m looking forward to my other boxes to try out some other meals ๐Ÿ™‚ I think they do smaller boxes as well for 1-2 people.
